As I’m not a political historian, writer, or pundit, I’m not going to make an attempt to make sense of Trump’s attack on Iran last night. Suggesting summer movies to watch as an escape from the news feels silly or delusional—a form of sticking one’s head in the sand—but it is also apparent that none of what is going on has anything to do with the actual citizens on the ground (in the US and Iran) and everything to do with egomaniacal, genocidal leaders and the donors pressuring them toward total extermination.

With that said, a blistering heat wave is hitting much of the United States this week, with one continuing in Europe, so tensions are likely to be even higher than usual. If you need to crawl into a dark, cool space for a few hours, any of the twenty-two films below are a good option for momentary escape; not all are light-hearted, but all capture some of the essence of summer. Just remember to turn off your phone—we all deserve a short break from the constant darkness of the news, a little reset.
