What kind of beauty are you? In 1977, Harper’s Bazaar profiled seven famous women, singling them out as different types of beauties. Bianca Jagger, Karen Black, Shelley Duvall, Diane von Furstenberg, Taryn Powers, Mary McFadden, and Margaux Hemingway—each a representative of a different way of approaching beauty. From Jagger’s emphasis on discipline to Hemingway’s belief in the outdoors, it is an attempt at looking at the pursuit of beauty with some diversity—though not really much diversity, as all but Bianca are white, all were born attractive, and all are wealthy so have all the privileges that come with that.
This special section is all about beauty power and seven women who have it. Each is a contemporary beauty who has developed her own style and attitude about the way she looks and what being beautiful means today. Individuality is the key; these seven prove that the day of copycat beauties is over. Women now can follow their instincts and celebrate their own beauty power as a positive force.
Even so, it is interesting to read these women’s perspectives on their looks and general maintenance (diet, exercise, makeup, skincare, haircare).

BIANCA HAS IT… THE DISCIPLINED BEAUTY
“There is no beauty without discipline; you must have rules. An undisciplined woman shows her disinterest in life… and when there is nothing behind her façade of beauty, she is boring.” – BIANCA JAGGER
POINT OF VIEW: “Beauty is a mixture of things. To feel beautiful, you must be at peace with yourself… do things that make you happy. Have a curiosity about everything, learn new things with enthusiasm. I admire people who are never blasé. Beauty should also have a sense of mystery about it, understanding and generosity along with fantasy and imagination. For a woman, it is also important to achieve something on your own… not be a parasite. My acting and dancing help to give me this. I’d hate to be known simply as a woman whose only interest is in clothes and make-up. They are important, but it is your spirit, your expression of true self, that is beauty.”
NUTRITION: “Nutrition is my most important discipline. Beauty is health, and what we eat is what we are. It is the basis of good skin and hair. I keep to a balanced diet, avoid excess sugar, salt and meat.”
EXERCISE: “The discipline one must have in studying dance is the best type of exercise for me. I take classes in modern, classic and tap, and find that it is a wonderful way to relieve aggression. It clears the mind… keeps you fit.”
• YOUR BEAUTY POWER If your looks are as strong and dramatic as Bianca’s, you can accent your eyes and lips with soft and sheer colors from The Borghese Quarto Colourings Collection: available at Bergdorf Goodman, New York; I. Magnin, California.
• BIANCA’S FASHION POWER Here and on the next two pages, Bianca wears clothes from her own wardrobe. Top: A beautiful black lace evening blouse, by Yves Saint Laurent. Her hair, by Ricci Burns; make-up, by Regis. Both in London where she was photographed.
BIANCA WEARS YVES SAINT LAURENT Middle: A sheer black lace blouse, a skirt of yellow satin with a butterfly pinned to the sash... a romantic and sexy look for evening that Bianca chose from a collection by Yves Saint Laurent. Diamond earrings by Elsa Peretti of Tiffany.
Bianca on Scent: "Choosing perfume is one of a woman's most personal forms of expression because it reflects who you are." If you have the spirit of discipline and mystery like Bianca, a good fragrance choice for you might be Parfum "Y" by Yves Saint Laurent.
A BRILLIANT MIX OF SEPARATES Bottom: Bianca's personal style comes through in the way she has put this evening look together: gold harem pants by Chris Seydou, a striped kimono by Ungaro with a wrap of fur by Valentino.
